CPA Pearland AlternativeBrazoria County's extra half percent sales tax

Brazoria County adds a 0.5 percent sales tax. Fort Bend County and Harris County don't have that county tax. That's why one side of Pearland charges 8.25 percent and another side charges 7.75.

Ask which side you're on
A tally of the Town Center lot at 8.25 and a till a few miles over at 7.75

Why half a percent matters.

Half a percent doesn't feel like much on one sale. Over a year of sales, it can add up to a new hire, a piece of equipment or a surprise bill. The mistake can go either way. If you charge 8.25 where the location owes 7.75, you've collected money that isn't yours. If you charge 7.75 where it owes 8.25, the state will ask you to pay the difference out of your own pocket.

Local code 4020006 is the Brazoria County tax. It sits on top of the city's 1.5 percent under code 2020024 and the state's 6.25 percent. That makes 8.25. Without the county tax, as in Fort Bend or a plain Harris County area, the total is 7.75. In a Harris County area with a management district, under code 5101650 or 5101696, the total is back to 8.25 for a different reason. The total is the same, but the codes on the return are different, and the return needs the right codes.

Next year's books shouldn't depend on someone remembering which side of town felt more expensive. We write the district next to each address, so the rate is on record and nobody has to remember it.

In 1960, Pearland annexed a 100 foot strip around about 60 square miles, out to the Fort Bend County line, so Houston couldn't take the land. Today the city reaches past that line into Fort Bend County, which is why two stores in Pearland can sit in different counties.

Running one business with locations in two counties.

Say you have one store on the Brazoria side and another a few miles into Fort Bend. It's one company, so it has one set of books. That's common in Pearland. The books still treat the two stores separately. Each store has its own sales, its own tax rate and its own tax owed, and the company finishes one month that includes both.

One bank deposit can cover both stores if the register report splits them. Owners like one deposit because banking is simpler. We like a split report because the return on the 20th is simpler. You can have both. What doesn't work is one rate typed into both registers because the software asked once during setup.

Staff who work at both stores need to know why the setting matters. A lecture won't do it. A monthly report that shows the difference clearly will, and then the right setting doesn't depend on one person's memory.

Shadow Creek and Pearland Town Center draw Saturday shoppers in different directions. When a Saturday is busier than usual, we check which store made the sales, because the tax rate follows the store.

What we fix, and what we leave alone.

If a register charged the wrong rate, the open months may need to be rebuilt so the tax owed matches what was collected and what was due. That's a cleanup job. We quote it before we start. It doesn't get folded into the monthly fee and discovered later.

Months you've already filed are a separate conversation. We don't change a filed return on a hunch. We'll tell you what we see, what a correction would involve, and when the better choice is to fix the setting going forward and keep an eye on it.

The school tax is a different thing from this half percent. Some owners hope one conversation will settle every public rate, and it won't. The school bill follows the school district for each address. This page is about the county sales tax. You can settle both before summer, but each one needs its own worksheet.

A lender looking at your year doesn't need a history lesson about annexation. A lender needs deposits that match the reports. We keep the history on this page because it helps explain the rates, and we leave it out of your financial statements.

Questions about the Brazoria County sales tax.

Is the Brazoria County sales tax new? No. Brazoria County's 0.5 percent sales tax has been in effect since January 1, 1990.

Does the county sales tax change my property tax? No. Property tax is a separate bill. A business in the Brazoria County part of Pearland files its property rendition with the Brazoria Central Appraisal District. A business in the Harris County part files with the Harris Central Appraisal District.

Why do some of my letters say Brazoria County Appraisal District? The district changed its name to Brazoria Central Appraisal District on September 9, 2025, and the new name took effect on January 1, 2026. Older letters and bookmarks still use the old name.

How to get started.

List your locations. Tell us what each register charges now, and whether you know which county each one is in. Those three facts are enough for a first conversation. If you know the local codes, that helps. If you don't, that's fine too.

You will be talking to the Steven Palmieri practice. The first call is a conversation about your locations and their counties, nothing more. If we work together, an engagement letter comes after we both agree on the scope.

If only one location is wrong, tell us which. We'd rather fix one register than review the whole company just to be thorough. That's what the monthly books are for, once the broken setting is fixed.

The half percent is a county tax with its own code. When it's handled that way, a busy Saturday is just a busy Saturday, and your return matches your records.
